Meet Travis Washington, MD, a Fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon based at McLaren Macomb in Mount Clemens, MI. In addition to his affiliation with McLaren Macomb, Dr. Washington is also a clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine where he not only teaches medical students but also trains orthopedic surgery residents.
Born and raised in Port Huron, MI, Dr. Washington’s unique perspective on patient care and approach to medicine can be summed up in a simple philosophy: treat every patient as he would want to be treated.
“I personally know how easy it is for people to feel lost in the system,” Dr. Washington says. “I want my patients to understand that they will always have my full attention and my best work.”
Dr. Washington is more than just an expert in his field – he’s also a compassionate listener who is committed to providing approachable and accessible care. He strives to create an environment where his patients feel heard and supported.
“The best thing to me is to have my patients say, ‘Dr. Washington gets me.’”
An advocate for patient education, Dr. Washington ensures that each of his patients is fully informed about their treatment options. He believes in empowering patients with knowledge, making sure they have no unanswered questions before embarking on their treatment journey.
Although his expertise lies in surgery, Dr. Washington doesn’t view it as the first line of treatment. On the contrary, he only recommends surgery when he’s confident it will improve the lives of his patients and solve their pain. His approach reflects his commitment to the well-being of his patients and his dedication to enhancing their quality of life.
“Surgery isn’t necessary for everyone but everyone who comes to me is in pain,” he explains. “My job is to recommend the path that makes the most sense for their individual circumstance – whether that’s physical therapy, pain management, surgery, or something else.”
When surgery is deemed necessary, Dr. Washington will recommend the least invasive method to do the job properly, and motion-sparing techniques whenever possible. He considers fusion surgery as a last resort, preferring to utilize cervical disc replacements and decompression without fusion whenever feasible. In the event that fusion surgery becomes necessary, Dr. Washington incorporates cutting-edge technology and employs both open and minimally invasive techniques to optimize outcomes.
Dr. Washington’s dedication to his patients extends beyond his office hours.
As he shares, “Whenever possible, I try to call my patients the night before surgery to ask if they have any questions or talk to their family members. I do this because I want to make sure they understand their procedure, and that no one is being rushed into something they don’t want.”
With Dr. Washington, you’re not just a patient; you’re a partner in your health journey.
